Pick Three - Christopher R. Weingarten

weingarten.jpg
When MTV's James Montgomery suggested his pal Christopher R. Weingarten for Pick Three I thought to myself, "Do I really need another bearded Brooklynite?" Then I decided why the hell not and Weingarten, a freelance writer whose work regularly appears in RollingStone.com, Spin, The Village Voice and more, did a perfectly dandy job and I'm super pleased to have him... beard and all (because this is a no stache zone, you guys).

Weingarten will be tweet reviewing 100 shows in four days at SXSW for Rolling Stone's Twitter. He's also on a couple panels - one for Interactive and Music Journalism in the Post Print Era during Music.

Mister Christopher played in the Brooklyn performance of the Boredoms' 88-drummer "Boadrum 88." He believes he has the world's largest collection of Christmas Rap and DJ's it every year. Interestingly, he writes captions for the hipster puppies tumblr.

His first book, a 33 1/3 on Public Enemy's It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back, is due out in May.

And here is his very fine...

Pick Three
Dillinger Escape Plan: These guys understand what a rock show is supposed to be--flailing, sweating, throwing shit, using all elements of the space, running on people's hands, enthralling and terrorizing. Maybe one of my favorite shows of all time was seeing these guys at [COMPETING FESTIVAL NAME REDACTED] when Greg Puciato picked up a stage moniter and threw it at some kid who was heckling him while strobe lights were flickering and stuttering. I saw them blow Nine Inch Nails off the stage during their own set. They've been the world's best metal band for like 10 years running--except that one year when it was Mastodon--and their new album is gorgeous, splitting the difference between their redonkulous terror-prog and the kind of soaring, 90s style Alternative Nation anthems of a Faith No More. It's almost unfair that one of the most gifted bands in the world also has one of the best shows. I never miss these these guys, and you shouldn't either.

YelaWolf: This dude is a motormouth Alabama rapper and made one of the best records of 2010 hands down. His Trunk Musik is technically a mixtape but plays like an album. Totally addictive mix of Bone Thugs and Eminem, a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll. He has a real everydude quality that makes for the best Southern rap. I guess I'll see if he can pull it off live.

Hauschka: SXSW is bloating up from BBQ and sweet tea, it's having sandbaggy feet from seeing a million shows, it's stopping to bullshit with 10 people you want to talk to and 100 people you DON'T want to talk to, it's watching your earplugs get increasingly orange and gross. That's why sometimes it's really nice to have a peaceful oasis of droney, mellow bliss. German pianist Hauschka is like an Erik Satie-style minimalist who also understands the tender indie-ambient steez of labels like Kranky and Temporary Residence. Whatever I'm doing that day, this is gonna be like a sigh of relief, believe me.
